James Nesbitt’s receding hairline makes a surprise comeback

He has made no secret of his fears about going bald. But it seems James Nesbitt has gone one step further in overcoming them. Where once the 44-year-old actor had a receding hairline, there is now a full head of hair. Nesbitt showed off his new thatch as he posed for photographers at the Bafta television awards and immediately prompted rumours of a hair transplant.

Hair raising: James Nesbitt showed off a thick thatch at the Bafta Television Awards on Sunday night compared to his receding hairline in 2006

The dark locks were in stark contrast to his appearance a couple of years ago. One onlooker said: ‘The difference is obvious to everyone. Hair doesn’t just reappear. Everyone is wondering how he’s done it.’ Nesbitt began losing his hair in his early twenties and has always been vocal about his hatred of going bald. In 2001 he admitted taking vitamin tablets in an attempt to slow his hair loss, and four years ago he said he was using a lotion to try to stimulate his follicles.

Although he said the sensation made his scalp feel like it was ‘going to explode’, he added: ‘It opens the pores of the scalp to encourage new growth. It’s ridiculous, but it’s horrible going bald. Anyone who says it isn’t is lying.’ Nesbitt, who used to worry that his baldness would affect his career, wore a thick black wig for his lead role in 2007 BBC drama Jekyll. ‘I’ve been saying to make-up artists for years that I want a full head of curly black hair and now I’ve got it,’ he said at the time. ‘It’s great that I finally get to wear wigs.’ The actor is the latest in a string of male celebrities who have made their hair reappear. Only last week, 43-year-old actor and comedian Rob Brydon was pictured with a thicker head of hair. Former EastEnders actor Sean Williamson has admitted using a transplant technique called Follicular Unit Extraction. Dragons’ Den judge Duncan Bannatyne and rugby player Kyran Bracken have also had the treatment, which costs up to £3,000.
