Understanding How Your Hair Is Structured Helps The Fight Against Hair Loss

Posted by Admin, on April 16th, 2009, under GENERAL HAIR LOSS, TRICHOTALK

Who’d have thought something as fine as a strand of hair could be so complex?

Here’s a little insight into the composition of your hair:

Papilla  at the base of each hair follicle is a structure called the papilla, made mainly of connective tissue and a capillary loop. Cell division in the papilla is rare or non-existent.

papilla1

Matrix  around the papilla, the hair matrix is a collection of closely packed cells often interspersed with pigment-producing cells, known as melanocytes. Cell division in the hair matrix forms the major structures of the hair fibre and the inner root sheath. Of all cell populations in the human body, the hair matrix epithelium is one of the fastest growing.

Root Sheath  this structure comprises an external root sheath, a middle layer, and an internal section of dead skin – or ‘cuticle’ – which is continuous with the hair fibre’s outermost layer.

Hair Fibre  this is composed of a section of dead skin that is continuous with the root sheath, an intermediate layer, and an inner core.

Other Structures connected to each hair follicle is a sebaceous gland, which generates the oily substance or ‘sebum’ that protects the hair and skin. Arrector pili muscles cause the follicle lissis to become more perpendicular to the surface of the skin. Apocrine glands secrete sweat. Hair follicle receptors sense the position of the hairs.

Who Is the Right Person To See About My Hair Loss Problem? Is It The Doctor? If Not Who? A Westminster Trichologist Is The Answer

Posted by Paul, on April 15th, 2009, under HAIR LOSS CLINIC REVIEWED, TRICHOLOGIST, YOUTUBE
To get advice and treatment for hair loss, you should always start with either your GP or a Westminster Trichologist.

Until very recently hair loss of any shape or form was regarded as a natural process to be endured. Your Doctor would be neither sympathetic nor understanding or helpful if you plucked up the courage to see him or her about your hair loss problem.

But things may be slowly changing. An increasing number of doctors realise that hair loss can have psychological consequences that significantly diminish quality of life, especially for both younger men and women alike, and they are becoming slightly more willing to take your hair loss problem more seriously than in the past.

If you are lucky enough to have an enlightened GP, by all means seek their advice at the very least, you’ll get a referral to a reliable Westminster Trichologist (although you will probably have to pay for any treatment you receive).

A Westminster Trichologist, by the way, is a hair specialist whose training covers both the cosmetic and the medical aspects of the subject.

Make My Hair Grow (What’s Normal Hair Loss And What’s Not): The Hair Growth Cycle

Posted by Admin, on April 14th, 2009, under HAIR LOSS FACTS, HAIR LOSS SCIENCE

Normal hair cycle is associated with the temporary loss of hair and the growth of new hair from the same follicles. The hair growth cycle in humans occurs in three phases:

hgc

Anagen-growth phase
Catagen-degradation phase
Telogen-resting phase

There is no break or discontinuity between phases; the hair cycle is a continuous process that occurs for the life of the hair follicle. A complete scalp hair cycle stretches over 2 to 8 years:

hgc1

Anagen (growth)-2 to 8 years
Catagen (degradation)-2 to 4 weeks
Telogen (rest)-2 to 4 months

The “dead” hair that was degraded during the catagen (degradation) phase is pushed out of the follicle when a new hair emerges in anagen (growth) phase. A healthy person with a full head of hair will shed on average 50 to 100 “dead” hairs per day. Shedding can be influenced by internal factors such as age, change in hormonal or nutritional status, skin disease and stress, and by external factors such as cancer chemotherapy, ionizing radiation, and exposure to some types of industrial chemicals.

All follicles, everywhere on the body, undergo hair cycle. The duration of each cycle may vary by body site; on the same person, scalp hair cycle may be slightly different in duration from body hair cycle.

ISHRS Releases Study Showing More Hair Is Still a Hot Commodity During Recession

GENEVA 9th April 2009

While lately most people are skeptical about their return on investment from stocks, some seem more inclined to invest in their locks.

According to a new online survey conducted by the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS), 59.8 percent of people who were asked whether they would rather have more hair, more money or more friends chose more hair. By comparison, only 26.2 percent of respondents chose more money and 13.9 percent said they would rather have more friends. Of the 1,407 people polled, slightly more women (64.2 percent) than men (59.1 percent) indicated they wanted more hair than more money or more friends.

“This survey confirms that even during tough economic times, the desire for more hair is undeniably strong and seen by many as an investment with real dividends — both personally and professionally,” said William M. Parsley, M.D., president of the ISHRS. “These days, men and women are looking for any edge in this tight job market. Getting their hair restored can help make people more marketable to employers in looking more youthful, not to mention more confident in their overall appearance.”
