Hair transplant surgery information update.

Posted by Gary Heron, on November 28th, 2007, under HAIR TRANSPLANT SURGERY

A hair transplant surgery treatment for baldness has been a problem for the doctors ever since and results were largely unsatisfactory. This fact prompted bald men and woman to go for wig and weaving. They both cause recurrent dandruff and scalp infection. An additional problem associated with weaving is further hair loss from the sides.

Modern plastic surgery can now offer bald men and women a safe, natural and permanent solution to this problem. This is hair transplant surgery. In this operation hair are taken (harvested) from the back of the patient’s own head and grafted on to the bald area in the front and top.

A strip of skin (less than an inch in width) is used to prepare thousands of mini (containing 2 to 3 hairs) and micro grafts (containing only 1 hair). These grafts are transplanted into very small holes in the bald area created by a fine needle.

Since the whole procedure requires very fine manoeuvres the operation is done under microscope magnification.

The transplanted hairs grow normally. They can be cut and groomed as natural hairs as long as the patient lives.

Hairs at the back and sides of the head are not affected by variations in hormone levels in the blood (which is quite usual after a certain age of a person), whereas, the hairs in front and top of the head are affected by this variation of hormone level — especially in those who have family history of baldness.

When hairs are transplanted from the back of the head, they continue to grow for the rest of the patient’s life and do not fall off even if the hormone levels fluctuate.

Hair transplant operation takes 4 to 6 hours depending on the number of grafts transplanted. Since the procedure is done under local anaesthesia, the patient can listen to music and have tea while the operation is being done.

No hospitalisation is required for this operation. Patients can go home soon after the surgery.

It takes few months for the newly transplanted hair follicles to grow as natural hairs. So patients have to wait for 3 to 4 months to see the real benefit of hair transplantation.

There is also a hair restoration programme that helps in preventing hair fall and improves hair growth. This programme includes a few months of medicinal treatment, some dietary instructions and some advice regarding hair care.

The cost depends on the surface area to be covered and hence the number of grafts used.

The treatment is available now in your area. People need not go to London for the treatment. We have started Hair Restoration programme along with Hair Transplant operations in Cosmetic Surgery Centre throughout the UK.

What women can do to stop hair loss.

Posted by Gary Heron, on November 28th, 2007, under TRICHOLOGIST

Dr. Reichman discusses why it happens and suggests possible remedies.

nbc_reichman_judith_thumb.jpg Dr Judith Reichman: TODAY contributor.

Question: I’m in my early 40s and I’ve noticed sudden hair loss. I’m devastated. Why is this happening and what can I do?

Answer: Women don’t expect to lose their hair (unlike men), so when it happens it’s extraordinarily traumatic.

We normally have, on average, 100,000 hairs on our scalp. And as evinced by our changing hair lengths, roots and visits to our hairdressers, those hairs grow; in fact, 90 percent of our hair is actively growing at any given time. Hair is the second fastest growing tissue in our body after (I’d love for you to guess) … bone marrow. To keep its place on your head, your hair needs the right conditions. (Note I didn’t say conditioner.) You may find that you’re unexpectedly losing hair if you impose restrictions on hair growth or if your genes are such that continued hair growth is not in your destiny.

Developing A Bald Patch? It Could Be A Hidden Tooth Infection.

Posted by Gary Heron, on November 28th, 2007, under HAIR LOSS SCIENCE, TRICHOLOGIST

ScienceDaily (Nov. 28, 2007) — There is a close relationship between infection outbreaks on teeth and the presence of alopecia areata or localized alopecia, a type of hair loss which has an unknown origin. Alopecia areata starts with bald patches on the scalp, and sometimes elsewhere on the body. The disease occurs in males and females of all ages, and experts believe that it affects 1 out 1000 people.
